And now, today’s insights, ready for you 👇🏻
ODFL TOP 5 INSIGHTS: What ODFL is and the playing field
1️⃣ 🚚 Scope and network. Old Dominion runs one nationwide LTL network with 261 service centers, 239 owned(≈96% of doors). Ownership locks prime sites near highways and protects transit maps. Terminals load out nightly and deliver next business day, with management reviewing daily productivity and service to keep standards tight.
2️⃣ 🏗️ Fleet and usage. The company operates 11.3k tractors, 31.5k linehaul trailers, and 15.3k P&D trailers. Average ages: tractors 4.3 years, trailers ~7 years. New tractors run linehaul 3–5 years then move to P&D. Many tractors work P&D by day and linehaul at night to push utilization higher.
3️⃣ 🕒 Service promise. Customers buy speed and predictability. ODFL reports ~99% on-time and ~0.1% claimsacross late-2024 to mid-2025, even in a soft market. This lets shippers lower safety stock and chargebacks, so they stay and often consolidate more freight with ODFL.
4️⃣ 🧭 Competitive set. Rivals include national and regional LTLs, plus parcel and rail for certain weights and speeds. ODFL cites faster, more reliable transits vs principal national competitors, helped by team driving, twin 28-foot sets, and load-planning software that trims touches and damage. Location + process widen the gap.
5️⃣ 🧪 External proof. In 2024 Mastio named ODFL No.1 national LTL for the 15th year, ranking first in 23 of 28attributes (trust, ease, customer service). Third-party surveys matter because they reflect thousands of shipper choices, not just one customer. Reputation compounds pricing and share.
